Jungfraujoch -Switzerland
Tucker and I decided our first day in Switzerland should be in the foothills of the Alps, where you start out your hike in a green valley and end up surrounded by snow on the "Top of Europe" (literally what the end station is called). We went a little crazy and decided to do it in true swiss fashion by combining the gondola, train and hiking.
This is the valley from the Maennlichen mountain where we got to by a combo of a train, gondola (you can see a tiny one on the right hand side of the image) and hiking. This is where you hike around the mountain and the view opens up to the first tall mountains of the alps. At the end of the hike you can catch the train up to the Jungfraujoch, since you cant climb up there. The train tunnel is actually burrowed through 2.5 mountains and took 17 years to build. Its an incredible feat of engineering considering it was built in 1894. It also performs the incredible feat of emptying your wallet when you buy the ticket to get up there.
This is the view from the Sphinx Observatory, which makes the steep price you paid to get up there worthwhile. You can see far into the alps and the beginning of the Aletschgletscher, the longest glacier in Europe.
Here you can see the Sphinx observatory perched on top of the massive mountain. We decided to brave to crazy weather and do the snow hike around which goes between the valley of two peaks.
The Swiss love their "ice palaces" which basically is a tunnel system built either into the snow or glacier with artists coming in and building the craziest ice sculptures. Well as luck would have it Tucker just LOVES anything underground so we just had to explore EVERY tunnel we came across (even if coming across meant a 1/2 hour detour). It was fun to run around under the snow.
Here we are in front of the Jungfrau mountain.
